Apartment Cleaning Schedule

What’s the best cleaning schedule for an apartment?

The most sustainable apartment cleaning schedule is a three-layer routine: 10 minutes of daily reset, about an hour of weekly cleaning, and a monthly deep-clean rotation. Small spaces get dirty faster than houses — but they also come back faster. Here’s the exact routine, sized for a real apartment and a real schedule.

Daily: the 10-minute reset

Do these six things every day and your apartment never spirals: make the bed (2 min), wipe kitchen counters and load/run the dishwasher after dinner (4 min), handle mail and stray items — everything back to its home (2 min), quick bathroom sink wipe (1 min), floors spot-check for crumbs (1 min). The point isn’t perfection; it’s preventing accumulation, which is what makes weekend cleaning miserable.

Weekly: the one-hour clean

Pick a consistent day — the routine sticks better than the motivation. In order (this sequence matters — dust falls, so you vacuum last):

  1. Bedrooms: change sheets, dust surfaces (10 min)
  2. Bathroom: toilet, shower/tub, sink, mirror, floor (15 min)
  3. Kitchen: stovetop, sink scrub, microwave interior, appliance fronts (15 min)
  4. Living areas: dust shelves and electronics, tidy soft surfaces (10 min)
  5. All floors: vacuum, then mop hard floors (10 min)

For a studio or one-bedroom, this genuinely fits in an hour. Two-bedrooms, add 20–30 minutes. Our weekly cleaning checklist → breaks each room down task by task if you want the detailed version.

Monthly: the rotation

Instead of one brutal deep-clean day, rotate one of these each weekend alongside the weekly clean: inside the fridge (toss, wipe shelves) · inside the oven and under stovetop burners · baseboards, door frames and light switches · shower grout and drains (grout guide →) · windows and mirrors properly · under and behind furniture you can move · washing machine and dishwasher self-clean cycles.

Seasonally (4× a year)

Mattress rotation and pillow wash, closet switch-over and declutter, curtains and blinds, air vents and radiators, the balcony if you’re lucky enough to have one. Boston-specific: post-winter salt residue by entryways in March, and window screens before the first warm week.

The honest alternative

If the weekly hour keeps losing to your actual life, that’s not a character flaw — it’s a scheduling conflict. A recurring cleaning service → every two weeks handles the weekly layer for you, and your only job is the 10-minute daily reset. Many of our apartment clients in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville use exactly that combination: professional bi-weekly clean, DIY maintenance between visits. It’s the difference between an apartment that’s clean twice a month and one that never really gets dirty.
