Deep Cleaning a Jamaica Plain Triple-Decker on Boynton Street — What the Job Actually Looked Like

Ibrahim reached out to BraBos on a Wednesday. He’d just moved into his home on Boynton Street in Jamaica Plain and wanted the place thoroughly cleaned before fully unpacking. The property was a classic JP multi-family — original hardwood floors throughout, a compact kitchen with tile flooring, older bathrooms, and the kind of lived-in details that come with a home that’s had more than one set of residents.

He wasn’t looking for a quick tidy. He wanted a reset — the kind of clean that makes a place feel like yours for the first time.

This post walks through exactly what our team did, room by room, and why a proper deep clean in an older Jamaica Plain home requires a different approach than a standard maintenance clean.

Why Deep Cleaning a JP Triple-Decker Is Different

Jamaica Plain has some of the most characterful housing stock in Boston. Homes on Boynton Street and the surrounding blocks were built primarily in the early-to-mid 1900s — which means you’re dealing with original hardwood floors that show every scuff mark, cast iron radiators that accumulate dust in their fins year-round, tile grout in bathrooms that has decades of buildup, and kitchen layouts that were designed before modern appliances existed.

These homes are beautiful. They’re also genuinely challenging to clean properly. A deep clean in a property like this isn’t just about covering more ground — it’s about knowing where the problem areas are in older construction and having the right technique for each surface.

Our team has cleaned hundreds of Jamaica Plain homes. Boynton Street isn’t unfamiliar territory.

The Bedrooms

Ibrahim’s home had multiple bedrooms, each with original hardwood floors. The bedrooms were the rooms he cared most about — his family was moving in, and he wanted every surface clean before furniture was arranged and beds were made.

Our team started from the top down in each room, which is the correct sequence for a deep clean: you don’t mop the floor and then dust the shelves. Every surface was dusted first — ceiling fan blades, the tops of furniture and shelving units, window sills, and door frames. High-touch areas including light switches, door handles, and outlet covers were wiped down with a disinfectant solution.

The hardwood floors were vacuumed thoroughly to remove all loose debris before mopping — skipping that step leaves grit on the floor that the mop just pushes around. We used a hardwood-safe cleaner, applied with a damp (not wet) mop, and worked with the grain. Baseboards along every wall were wiped by hand.

The kid’s bedroom got the same treatment — shelving units dusted and wiped, the floor done properly, windows cleaned. When you’re moving a family in, the details in the children’s rooms matter just as much as anywhere else.

The Kitchen

The kitchen on Boynton Street was a compact, functional space — tile floor, wooden cabinets, a gas range with a range hood above it, and a double sink. This is the room where deep cleaning earns its name.

Countertops were cleared and cleaned, including underneath small appliances. Cabinet exteriors were wiped down — the fronts and the handles, which accumulate grease and fingerprints faster than any other surface in the kitchen. The stovetop was degreased: burner grates removed, the surface scrubbed, grates cleaned separately and replaced. The range hood filter and exterior were cleaned — range hoods in older homes often go years without proper attention and become a significant grease buildup point.

The oven exterior was cleaned. The microwave interior was wiped. The sink and faucet were scrubbed and polished. The tile floor was swept, then mopped in sections.

In an older kitchen like this one, you also check the areas around and behind the appliances — the side panels of the stove, the gap between the counter and the wall, the floor under the freestanding units. These are the places that get missed on a standard clean and that accumulate the most in an older home.

The Bathrooms

Bathrooms in early-1900s Jamaica Plain homes often have original tile work — which looks great and cleans up well, but requires the right products and technique. Abrasive cleaners damage older tile glazing. Our team uses non-abrasive solutions on tile surfaces and scrubs grout lines by hand where needed.

The full bathroom deep clean covered: toilet scrubbed inside and out including the base and behind the tank, shower and tub scrubbed and rinsed, sink and faucet cleaned and polished, mirror cleaned streak-free, all surfaces wiped including the top of the vanity and the inside of the cabinet if accessible, floor mopped. Towel bars and toilet paper holders were wiped down — the small things that signal a space has been properly cleaned, not just looked at.

The Result

Ibrahim’s review after the job:

“Had an amazing experience with this company. Very professional and overall did an amazing job. House feels brand new.”

That’s what a proper deep clean does for a home that’s changing hands. It’s not just about cleanliness — it’s about giving a family a genuine fresh start in their space. When Ibrahim unpacked, he was setting up a clean home, not inheriting the residue of whoever lived there before.

When Does a Deep Clean Make Sense?

Ibrahim’s situation — moving into a new home — is one of the most common reasons Jamaica Plain residents book a deep clean. But it’s not the only one. Our JP clients also book deep cleans for:

  • Seasonal resets — particularly spring cleaning after a Boston winter
  • Before listing a rental property or preparing for a new tenant
  • Post-renovation cleanup after work on kitchens, bathrooms, or floors
  • First-time clients who want to start a recurring cleaning plan from a proper baseline
  • Homes that haven’t had a thorough clean in a year or more

A deep clean and a standard house cleaning are different services. A standard clean maintains a home that’s already in good shape. A deep clean addresses what’s accumulated over time — and in an older Jamaica Plain home, that’s a meaningful difference.
