How to Clean Oven Like A Pro

The oven is one of the hardest-working appliances in your kitchen — and one of the most neglected when it comes to cleaning. Baked-on grease, burnt food residue, and carbon buildup don’t just look unpleasant; they affect the taste of your food, reduce the efficiency of your oven, and over time can even become a fire hazard. The good news is that a truly clean oven doesn’t require harsh chemical sprays or expensive products. Here’s how to do it properly, room by room.

Before You Start: Safety First

Always make sure your oven is completely cool before cleaning it. Turn it off and give it at least an hour after last use. Remove the oven racks and set them aside — they’ll be cleaned separately. If your oven has a self-cleaning function, be aware that it works by burning residue at very high temperatures, which can generate strong fumes. Open windows and run your extractor fan if you use it.

How to Clean the Inside of Your Oven

The baking soda paste method (best for heavy buildup)

This is the most effective DIY method for a heavily soiled oven interior and requires no harsh chemicals at all.

Mix half a cup of baking soda with just enough water to form a spreadable paste — roughly the consistency of shaving foam. Remove your oven racks, then spread the paste over every interior surface using rubber gloves, avoiding the heating elements. The paste will turn brown as it contacts grease and residue. Leave it for a minimum of 12 hours, or overnight for best results.

The next day, use a damp cloth to wipe out as much of the dried paste as possible. For stubborn spots, a plastic scraper works well without scratching the oven surface. Once most of the paste is removed, spray white vinegar over any remaining baking soda residue — it will fizz on contact, helping to lift the last of the grime. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and repeat until the interior is clear.

The vinegar and baking soda method (for lighter maintenance cleans)

For a less intensive clean between deep cleans, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the interior surfaces generously, sprinkle baking soda over the wet surfaces, and allow the fizzing reaction to work for 20 to 30 minutes. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. This is an excellent habit to build after every few uses to prevent heavy buildup from accumulating in the first place.

How to Clean Oven Racks

Oven racks can be soaked in the bathtub or a large basin filled with hot water and a generous squirt of dish soap. Leave them to soak for a few hours, then scrub with a non-scratch scouring pad. For particularly stubborn baked-on grease, sprinkle baking soda directly onto the wet rack and scrub — the mild abrasion makes a significant difference. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before returning them to the oven.

How to Clean the Outside of Your Oven

Stainless steel exterior

Wipe down with a microfibre cloth dampened with a small amount of dish soap and warm water, always moving in the direction of the grain to avoid streaking. Follow with a dry cloth. For fingerprints and smudges, a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth works well. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on stainless steel as they will scratch the surface permanently.

Painted or enamel exterior

A paste of baking soda and water applied with a soft cloth handles most exterior grime effectively. For general cleaning, warm soapy water and a non-scratch cloth is all you need. White vinegar diluted with water in a spray bottle is a good all-purpose exterior cleaner that cuts through grease without leaving residue.

How to Clean the Oven Door and Glass

The oven door glass tends to collect baked-on grease that ordinary wiping won’t shift. Apply a thick layer of baking soda paste to the inside of the glass, leave for 20 to 30 minutes, then scrub gently with a non-scratch pad and wipe clean with a damp cloth. For the exterior of the glass, warm soapy water and a microfibre cloth will give you a streak-free finish.

How Often Should You Clean Your Oven?

A light wipe-down of spills and splashes after every few uses prevents residue from baking on and becoming a much bigger job later. A proper deep clean — following the baking soda paste method above — should happen every three to six months depending on how frequently you cook. If you’re regularly roasting meats or cooking at high temperatures, lean toward the three-month schedule.

When the Kitchen Needs More Than Just the Oven

A deep-cleaned oven is a great start, but the kitchen as a whole — splashbacks, extractor hood filters, countertops, cabinet fronts — accumulates grease and grime just as quickly. If a full kitchen deep clean is overdue, our deep cleaning service in Boston covers every surface properly, not just the obvious ones.

For ongoing maintenance, our recurring cleaning service keeps your kitchen and the rest of your home consistently clean on a schedule that works for you.
