Move-In Cleaning Near the MIT Museum, Cambridge — Kendall Square Loft Apartment

Massachusetts Avenue outside the MIT Museum is one of the most recognisable stretches of Cambridge — the kind of street where the boundary between university campus and city neighbourhood blurs entirely. The MIT Museum sits at the edge of the Kendall Square corridor, where older industrial and commercial buildings have been steadily converted into residential units over the past two decades. The result is a distinctive property type that doesn’t exist elsewhere in Cambridge: loft-style apartments with exposed brick walls, high ceilings, concrete or polished floors, and open-plan layouts that attract researchers, engineers, and professionals working in the biotech and tech cluster nearby.

This move-in clean was booked by an incoming tenant who wanted the apartment properly cleaned before moving their belongings in. The previous tenant had left the property in reasonable condition, but “reasonable” is not the standard you want when you’re unpacking into a new home. The client wanted every surface, appliance, and fixture cleaned to a genuine move-in standard — not just a surface wipe-down.

What We Found

The apartment was empty and accessible, which is the ideal condition for a move-in clean — no furniture to work around, full access to every corner, edge, and surface. The kitchen was the main focus: white shaker cabinets had residue on the fronts and interiors, the stainless steel dishwasher and appliances had smear marks and grease buildup, and the countertops and sink needed a proper sanitisation rather than a wipe-down. The exposed brick wall behind the kitchen counter — a feature of this building type — had accumulated dust in the mortar lines. The bathroom had soap scum and water marks across the white subway tile, with early limescale buildup around the faucet fixtures and showerhead.

None of this was severe — it was the normal accumulation of a lived-in apartment between tenants. But it was enough that moving in without cleaning it first would mean starting in someone else’s residue, which is exactly what a move-in clean is designed to prevent.

What We Did

Our team worked through the apartment room by room, starting with the kitchen. Cabinet fronts were wiped down and interiors cleaned throughout. The stainless dishwasher, fridge, and appliances were cleaned and polished. The countertops were fully sanitised. The sink was scrubbed and descaled. The stovetop and hood exterior were degreased. The exposed brick was dusted carefully along the mortar lines.

In the bathroom, the subway tile was scrubbed throughout — walls, grout lines, and the tub surround. The showerhead and faucet fixtures were descaled. The toilet was scrubbed and disinfected inside and out. Mirrors were cleaned streak-free. All surfaces and fixtures were wiped down and the floor mopped.

Living areas and the bedroom were vacuumed and mopped throughout, including edges and corners. Baseboards and window sills were wiped down. All high-touch surfaces — light switches, door handles, outlet covers — were cleaned and sanitised. The apartment was left in a condition the client could move directly into.

The Result

The client moved in the following day. The apartment was genuinely clean from floor to ceiling — not just tidy, but sanitised, descaled, and reset. The kitchen cabinets were clean inside and out. The stainless appliances were polished. The bathroom tile was restored to a bright, clean finish. The floors were clear and clean throughout.

This is what a move-in clean should deliver — a home that’s properly ready for the next chapter, not just visually acceptable. In a building type like this one, where the surfaces and finishes are specific to the conversion, getting the clean right matters more, not less.
