Kendall Square is one of the most exciting innovation hubs in the country. World-class biotech firms, AI companies, robotics startups — it all happens right here in Cambridge, MA. But behind every great pitch deck and product launch, there’s an office that desperately needs cleaning.
That’s exactly the call we got last month. The operations manager of a growing tech startup on the Kendall Square corridor reached out to BraBos Cleaning Services with a straightforward but urgent request: “Our office is embarrassing. We have new investors coming in two weeks and I don’t even want to think about what they’ll see.”
We showed up. And what we found was pretty eye-opening.
“We’ve been so focused on growth that the office just got away from us. BraBos came in and handled everything professionally and thoroughly. I genuinely couldn’t believe how different it looked afterward. Wish we’d called sooner.” — Operations Manager, Kendall Square Startup, Cambridge
The Challenge: A Startup Office That Forgot About Cleaning
It’s a story we hear often in Kendall Square. A team of fifteen hustles through their first two years — heads down, building the product, chasing funding. Cleaning happens “when there’s time.” And there’s never time.
When we arrived at their open-plan office — roughly 1,800 square feet across a main workspace, kitchen area, two bathrooms, and a small conference room — here’s what we were dealing with.
The Kitchen Area: The Worst of It
The microwave: Splattered food residue caked onto the interior walls and ceiling — weeks, possibly months of buildup.
The refrigerator: Old takeout containers, unidentifiable spills on every shelf, and door seals with visible mold growth.
The countertops: Coffee rings, crumbs, and sticky residue under the espresso machine that had clearly never been moved.
The sink: Limescale buildup, a drain slowing from food debris, and grease around the faucet base.
The floors: Scuff marks, dried spills, and dust accumulation in the corners behind the trash cans.
The Open Workspace: Not as Bad, but Not Good
Desks: Significant dust buildup on monitor backs, keyboard trays, and cable management areas — the spots everyone skips.
Floors: Reasonably clean in high-traffic zones, but completely neglected under desks and along the walls.
Glass partitions: Fingerprints, smudges, and adhesive residue from sticky notes that had been pulled off and restuck too many times.
Air vents: Visible dust accumulation on ceiling vents directly above workstations.
The Bathrooms: Two of Them, Neither Pretty
Toilets: Mineral ring staining in both bowls, grime at the base, and soap scum on the flush handles.
Sinks: Calcium buildup on the faucets, residue around the drain, and a general dullness to the basins.
Mirrors: Water spots, fingerprints, and a cloudiness that no amount of paper towel was going to fix.
Floors: Grout lines dark with accumulated grime despite what looked like regular surface mopping.
The Conference Room: Almost Forgotten
The whiteboard: Layers of dry-erase marker that hadn’t been properly cleaned in months — ghost images from old meetings were clearly visible underneath the current content.
The table: Water rings, pen marks, and sticky residue near the charging station cutouts.
The chairs: Dust in the wheel casters, light staining on the fabric seats.
Our Approach: Commercial Deep Cleaning Done Properly
Our team of three commercial cleaning professionals spent just over five hours on this office. We don’t rush commercial deep cleans — there’s too much to miss if you do.
Kitchen — Full Reset
We removed everything from the countertops and cleaned surfaces from top to bottom. The microwave interior was treated with a commercial degreaser, left to soak, then scrubbed clean. The refrigerator was fully emptied, every shelf and drawer sanitized, the door seals treated for mold, and the interior deodorized. We descaled the faucet, polished the sink basin, and deep cleaned behind and underneath the espresso machine — the coffee grease situation there was significant. Floors were mopped including the corners and behind the trash cans that nobody ever moves.
Workspace — The Details That Make the Difference
Every desk surface was dusted, including monitor backs, cable areas, and under-desk accessories. The glass partitions were cleaned with commercial streak-free solution and the adhesive residue from the sticky notes was removed without leaving marks. We vacuumed under all desks and along wall perimeters, wiped down every air vent, and sanitized all high-touch surfaces — door handles, light switches, shared equipment, and communal charging cables.
Bathrooms — Sanitized to a Proper Standard
Both bathrooms received a full deep clean. Mineral ring staining in the toilet bowls was treated with a pumice stone technique that removes buildup without scratching the porcelain. Faucets were descaled, mirrors polished to streak-free, and grout lines scrubbed on both floors. We restocked paper products and soap dispensers before leaving.
Conference Room — Ready for Investors
The whiteboard was the most satisfying part. Using a professional whiteboard restoration cleaner, we removed all the ghost imaging and brought the surface back to a clean white. The conference table was treated for water rings and pen marks with a wood-safe cleaning solution. Chairs were wiped down, the carpet vacuumed, and the full AV setup — screen, cables, remote controls — was cleaned and neatly managed.
The Result: Investor-Ready in One Visit
When the operations manager walked back in at the end of the day, her exact words were: “This doesn’t even feel like the same place.”
The kitchen smelled clean for the first time in a while. The bathrooms were spotless. The conference room looked professional. The team’s workstations were dust-free and organized. The whole space felt lighter — more focused.
Two weeks later, the investors came. We don’t know if the clean office helped close the round. But we’re pretty sure it didn’t hurt.
Why Regular Commercial Cleaning Matters More Than You Think
Startups and growing businesses often treat office cleaning as a low-priority line item. When you’re building something, cleaning feels like overhead. But a dirty office has real consequences that compound over time.
It affects employee wellbeing and focus — people work better in clean, organized spaces. It affects air quality — mold in fridge seals, dust in vents, and neglected bathrooms are genuine health concerns for anyone spending forty hours a week in that environment. It affects company culture — the physical space reflects how a team values itself and its work. And it affects first impressions — clients, candidates, and investors notice things you’ve stopped seeing.
The good news is that staying on top of it is far easier than recovering from months of neglect. A regular recurring commercial cleaning service — even just bi-weekly — means you never end up in the “embarrassing to a client” situation again.
