What cleaning supplies does an apartment actually need?
An apartment needs about 12 supplies, and every one of them fits under the kitchen sink: an all-purpose cleaner, a bathroom cleaner, a glass cleaner, dish soap, baking soda, white vinegar, microfiber cloths, a scrub sponge set, a toilet brush, a spray mop, a compact vacuum, and a duster with an extendable handle. Small spaces don’t need less cleaning than houses — they need less stuff, chosen better.
The 12-piece kit
Chemistry (6): A quality all-purpose spray handles counters, tables, and most surfaces. A dedicated bathroom cleaner (soap scum needs different chemistry than kitchen grease). A glass cleaner for mirrors and windows. Dish soap — also the right degreaser for many jobs. Baking soda and white vinegar cover the specialty cases: deodorizing, mineral deposits, burnt pans. Tools (6): Microfiber cloths (a dozen — they’re the workhorse of everything). Non-scratch scrub sponges. A toilet brush with a holder. A spray mop (no bucket to store — the apartment advantage). A compact or stick vacuum that you’ll actually pull out for a two-minute job. A microfiber duster with an extendable handle for ceiling corners and the top of the fridge.
Skip these in a small space
A full mop-and-bucket set (the spray mop wins on storage), a carpet shampooer (rent one the one weekend a year you need it), single-purpose gadgets (stove-crevice tools, blind dusters), and paper towels as a primary system — they cost more per month than a set of microfibers costs once.
Storage: one caddy, one rule
